Potato Harvesting In Abbeyside
Members of the Abbeyside community photographed at the allotments in Skehacrine, Abbeyside. The last two people on the right are: Richard and Bridget Burke. Bridget is wearing a ”máilín” for holding the seed potatoes. Maudie Burke Dalton is fourth from the right and her son Richard is in the same furrow. The land (which was divided into allotments) was sourced by Dungarvan Urban District Council for the purposes of planting potatoes. A circular was sent to 38 owners and occupiers of land within a radius of the town and none of them offered land for the purpose of sowing potatoes. Later Mr. J. F. Moloney offered 12 acres of land at Skehacrine, Abbeyside to the council for setting potatoes in 1917. The council accepted this offer on the 26th January 1917.
